In this 4th chapter of the CAGED system, we are going to look at Dominant 7th chords. Often, these are abbreviated to A7, B7, E7 etc. These are wildly used in popular music and are you quintessential ‘blues’ chords. It’s quite common for tabs online to provide you with the wrong type of 7th chord so very useful to know the difference between the different types.

Learning all shapes will provide you with lots of variety in terms of chord voicings/ tone etc.

So the 5 open shapes are as follows:

Now we change the fingering slightly (not necessary with the C shape) so the shapes can be moved up the neck. Here’s an example of playing F7 in all 5 shapes up the neck.
